How to use Intention & Focus
The word intention caught my attention when my coach and now mentor asked me “State your intentions more clearly “. Such a short sentence and it stopped me in my tracks. It caused me to pause and reflect on all that I had been planning . This event occurred when I was going through a period of dynamic transition from a full time paid job to becoming self employed. It was one of the turning points in life which guided me to achieve what I had mentally conceived. As Napoleon Hill once said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” I achieved this by focusing my attention to the clear intentions that I had developed. You too can conceive and achieve any possibility using your mind by developing clear intentions and focusing on them.
So to use intention and focus you begin with
- Stating clear intentions
- Check if Intentions are aligned to your passions and not egocentric.
- Develop an action plan
- Focus – Pay attention to your intention & the action plan that has sprung out of that intention
- Experience the manifestation of your intention
Wikipedia states “
Intention is a mental state that represents a commitment to carrying out an action or actions in the future” . The Merriam Webster gives the meaning as “the thing that you plan to do or achieve : an aim or purpose”
#1 Stating clear intentions: –
The first and foremost step in manifesting is to have a purpose an aim. For instance one of my clearly stated intention- spend an hour or more in meditation every day. You could have different intentions. Some of you might be looking for financial success. You could use the six step process , again given by Napolean Hill in his book Think and grow rich. Or you might have an intention for a brand new car. You are only limited by your beliefs & imagination while developing your intentions.
A note on Limited beliefs. Even though I am digressing a bit- one of the coaches I know trains & coaches people to overcome their limiting beliefs. I mention this because he does it by making them walk on fire. Check it out . When a person who had a belief that walking on fire is impossible does that impossible task without getting harmed a shift or Breakthrough occurs. Imagine what happens to many of the other limiting beliefs? I am not suggesting you walk on fire by your self. It should suffice to know that the limited beliefs are all in the mind and can be transcended.
Once you have the intention in your mind – work with it. If you are a visual person take time to imagine what this will look like as if it is occurring now you can also use pictures or paint it. Write it down. During your active imagination you can also feel the emotions that arise as you achieve this. Use the mind it has unlimited power. Look up helpful links at the end of the blog page
Are your intentions ego driven or unfolding as per life’s purpose?
Are the Intentions aligned with your passions?
Eckhart Tolle puts it beautifully in one of his Q&A sessions “The ego comes not from fullness but from neediness, from a sense of “not enough”, and that is the ego desire. The ego says, “I desire that car because I will really feel better when I am sitting in that car and driving it – especially if other people see me in it”. Without other people, it doesn’t really work. It only begins to work for the ego if other people have cars that are not like yours, the same with a house or anything else that you acquire, any possession. You can perfectly enjoy a nice house or nice car without the ego deriving any pleasure from it, or enhancing itself.” You might want to read the complete Q & A version.
It might be better to have intentions that are aligned with life’s purpose for you. Setting intentions to appease the personality has its downward spiral.
Next you should enquire – Are the intentions aligned with your passions ? check out if your intentions line up with what you love doing? For instance if you are not passionate about becoming wealthy then having an intention to be a millionaire will not get through. I found Janet Attwoods book the passion test powerful and useful. There is a lot of fun when your intentions are aligned with what you love doing.
You can take a quick passion test to discover your top passions
There is a lot of information and data available on goal setting and planning . You can use an app or tool or just write down the goals and plan in your journal. When you develop your goals keep them SMART. SMART Stands for Specific – Measurable – Attainable – Realistic – Time based.
Finally put the plan in action by paying attention to it- #4 FOCUS on it:
In NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming one of the presuppositions is “What you focus on expands” and “I create my own reality” Read more . Focus by giving it your mental time, your energy in executing actions, focus by living the intention each day
It was with a lot of interest that i observed the unfolding of my intention of being self employed. It was aligned with my passions. This lead me to develop a plan of action with specific goals which i focused on. By paying attention to the intention i was able to make the transition from a full time job to be self employed. Now i am experiencing something which was conceived only in the mind. You too can get on this amazing journey, if not doing already.
